Fuel Tank Calibration

10/09/2008 5:13 AM

Hey there, i need to caliberate fuel tank for my work place, which has been caliberated before but with enough errors.Horizontal tanks at 3.8 degrees tilt,2887mm diameter and 12,811 in length.Holding 81,000 litres,

The second tank is 80,000litres, 2,887mm diameter, 12,373mm length. How do i caliberated with with minimum error?

hi chimi, volume in litres for a horizontal cylindrical tank = l{[r^2*acos((r-h)/r)]-[sqrt(2rh-h^2)*(r-h)]}/10^3 where l - length in cm r - radius in cm h - present dip level in cm (in first case for full tank it is 288.7cm) I monitor my daily fuel consumption using the above formula but my tank is with zero tilt. I also have made a excel worksheet with this formula and would share if you give your email id. I find this fairly accurate. Good luck, kayems.

Hello Kayems,
I am trying to calibrate a Horizontal Jet A1 Fuel tank. It has x ammount of tilting as well. Please email me your Excell worksheet in order for me to figure out my tank calibration. I would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot. email: julianduarte.aerofull@gmail.com

You could have somebody do a 3D model.

They would need the inside diameter and the inside length.

It would be easy for them to put a 3.8 degree tilt on it.

Then they could figure out the volume at specified heights.

Maybe an hours work.

First full grief the car tank used to supply the tank whose volume is desired to calibrate. To unload the liquid until the mark of gauging that it has or in its defect to place one previously marks arbitrary to have a reference. To determine the density of the fluid referring it to a temperature of reference (20° C, 15° C, or another one). To weigh the car tank after the unloading. The difference in weight divided between the density corresponds to the volume of the fluid until the mark of gauging (or reference) in liters to the temperature of reference, of course, that are due to handle the values in the suitable units.

Fuel Tanks are calibrated by manually filling up the fuel tank using small standard containers of known volume and at the same time taking note of the corresponding liquid level.

If your tank is horizontal, read http://www.iso.org/iso/iso_catalogue/catalogue_tc/catalogue_detail.htm?csnumber=35926

(ISO 12917-1)

it the tank is vertical: http://www.iso.org/iso/iso_catalogue/catalogue_tc/catalogue_detail.htm?csnumber=37004

(ISO7507-1:2003)

need to take temperature into account because thermal expansion and contraction of 80,000 liters is going to mess up the fluid level.

in aerospace we always want to know pound mass (lbm) and not gallons or liters

make graphic cuts (from Catia/Unigraphics/Solidworks...) of the tank and get volume versus height

from fluid type get thermal expansion coefficient

measure fluid temperatue in tank get fluid density

from above you should be able to calculate actual volume & lbm
