Eiger: Old Machines, New Windows

05/19/2005 8:35 AM

Microsoft is working on a new Windows-based operating system designed to help older machines run better. The software, code-named Eiger, will look and feel much like Windows XP and will be equipped with Service Pack 2. The idea behind Eiger came from businesses and school systems that said they couldn't afford to replace old computers, but wanted improved security and manageability.

Leaking what?

So they were forced to remove the memory leaks and useless features that come standard with XP? I'd be willing to buy that to go on my new 2.4GHz computer, it would run a whole lot faster and be a lot more stable. I have very little patience for bloatware.

I wish they had thought of this 5 years ago

That way we could install it on the computers in our lab. With windows 98, those machines are holding a spyware/malware convention, yet they don't have the system requirements for XP.

What about Windows 2K? I know the university has an unlimited seat license.

I don't know. The IT guy said it couldn't be upgraded. Plus, I don't know how much we gain by going to 2000.
