power for hard drive

What do I need to use a cpu power supply to supply voltage to an external hard drive with out the use of the mother board?

If you'd like only to power a hard drive, all you need would be the power source itself. Remember that the computer power sources already come with connectors that have the required DC pins in the correct order to supply the drives.

If you'd like to connect and exchange data to and from an external hard drive, well, then you'd better buy an external hard drive enclosure that provides it to you.

On the top nameplate of you HD, you'll have the required data for the power it will require, generally +12VDC, +5VDC + 2 grounds, along with the required currents for each supply.

A computer PSU can supply these (as stated above) or some powersupplies from other manufacturers like PowerBox and Setec can supply smaller computer grade PSU's

You will probably have to load the +5V significantly, perhaps as much as a few ampres as some PC supplies requre a load on the +5 for the other voltages to regulate correctly.

thats when you buy a real PSU, not the cheapy computer generic.
