Design and Construction of a Derrick for Rope Access Demonstration

10/17/2008 10:03 AM

Dear All,

Please i would like the house to help me out with this one. I am trying to modify a derrick that can used for rope access demonstration purposes. Such that the structure can be detachable at all the joints even at the height of the pipes used for the structure. it will have dimension of 2m X 2m at the base, 10m X 10m for the height, 1.5m X 1.5m at the top. I would like us to consider the dimensions and its purpose is just for rope access demonstration that is it would be carrying load of about 200kg. That would used for demonstration in the oncoming oil and gas exhibition in Nigeria.

The Derick you described in general terms should more than handle you're load requirements. BUT you really need to give more information....

Steel dimensions????

I know very well that the derrick can carry a heavier load than that earlier stated, but i was just trying to specify what its intent is. As in just for Rope access demonstration that would involve no more than two personnels at a time. but as per the dimensions rope access activities usually require a reasonable height at least to demonstrate to customers what the profession is all about. as regards the dimensions , the design of this structure is meant to be detachable so that it can be coupled at the exhibition venue, put to use and be easily discoupled after it use. Was just requesting for suggestion as regards the dimensions and the use of mechanical fasteners wrt its rigidity. (base :2m X 2m), (Top: 1.5m X 1.5m), (Height:10m) and it has to be detachable for ease moving from place to place. Suggesting the use of 3'' hollow pipe section to make it as light as possible.

Hi....a 2m x 2m c/s tubular section about 10m long can pick-up a much much higher load. Even if its just for a demo. You could get the dimentiones trimmed a bit. Just approach a structural engineer in your neighbourhood and he would be able to guide/draw a simple design for you.

I see you're not getting any useful answers. I, for one, am not sure what a "rope access demonstration" is. Do you need the 1.5-2 m dimensions for the access part? Maybe you could enlighten us on what a rope access demonstration is.
