thank you for that bit of advice, Tim in Mexico... but in my case, patience is not enough...and i can't give up on the thing either....and yeah, I registered at potain.com, but till date, I haven't received my username and password...and the Data Sheets dont contain any information regarding the hapless 1978 model Potain 8520R I'm stuck with.

I feel your pain and discomfort my friend... You may need to go the reverse, back door route as I so often do when things don't go quite as fast as I'd like them to...

It appears that this company has merged or been swallowed up by the industry giant in this field. You may need to surf around, jot down all the numbers you find and start calling Monday morning (knowing full well that they will probably all refer you back to square one). In cases like this, you need to speak clearly and get your state of urgency across quickly before the person on the other end looses interest with your problem.

I have had many successful out comes doing this, many folks at the "company" will have access to your material but you need to make them want to help you.

Meenwhile, I'm still searching on this wet, rainy Sunday in Mexico...

Actually Tim, my reasons for getting hold of all the tech specs of the 8520R are as follows:

1. The potain 8520R is critical to the progress of construction on our site(which incidentally happens to be located in the Kingdom of Bahrain). Since this tower crane is over 30 years old, it is continuously breaking down. The most serious problem occured 3 weeks ago.

2. The problem is associated with its swing ring. The ball bearings have worn out and the swing ring has developed a play of +- 10 mm(approx).

3. As a direct result of this, the jib and counterweight "see saw" back and forth while the crane is loaded and unloaded.

4. This puts a strain on the 10 inch bolts holding the entire jib and counterweight to the mast section. The crane is now unsafe to operate.

5. The local technician in Bahrain is of the opinion that the tower crane has to be lowered from it current height(of about 70 m), dismantle the jib and counterweight, and replace the swing ring with a new one, and raise the crane back to its original height; needless to say, a very expensive operation.

Is there any other cost effective way of repairing this crane?

Maybe it is time to bite the bullet and purchase a new crane. Thirty years is a long life for a tower crane.

Yes Bruce, thirty years is a long lifespan for a tower crane...I guess in Europe and America, such prolonged usage would be unheard of...The rules in Bahrain are lax about these things...Our other option is to dismantle the whole thing and replace it with a new one..But the building is already upto the second floor and the new crane's mast section is quite different from the old one's. The pilecap upon which the 8520R currently stands on now has to be demolished(by the use of a pneumatic jackhammer) and a new footing made in its place. The footing is below the basement floor slab. No access for heavy machinery. Lots of work there too.

Was in contact with a technician from Manitowoc. He says that replacing the swing ring with another one is possible without dismantling the whole thing, but the process is very complicated and difficult. And my guess is that nobody in Bahrain does that sort of specialised work.

Get in touch with this man, his company specializes in off shore cranes. But he is by far one of the most honest and knowledgeable men I have ever met in the crane business.

Solution Crane Services

Glenn Duncan

gduncan&solutioncraneservices.com

This number is as if you were calling his Mexican office from the states as I have no idea what numbers are required from your location 011 52 938 382 7588.

He just may have some suggestion that would get you through this project. Or be willing to inspect the unit and offer another oppinion.
