ASME UG-46 Inspection Opening

10/19/2008 11:05 PM

Dear members

I have one vessel I.D=600mm with one handhole at the bottom of shell, our AI from ABS comment that one handhole or one pipe plug shall be in each head or in the shell near each head as per UG-46(f)4. This requirement is mandatory or not? and what function handhole shall be in each head.

Anyone can clarify to me?

Thank you.

Yes, this is a mandatory requirement.

The biggest reason for the two handholes (if you don't go with a manhole) is to allow for inspections - more exactly - a light shone into one hole will illuminate the interior surfaces as viewed from the other hole.

Hi,

Yes it's mandatory. The proposed of hand hole is for maintenance and can be as well inspection hole. The size can refer to related UG's requirements.

Ensure you already added prior final inspection by AI.

Enjoy your hot coffee,

Cheers ,
