How Can We Interfacing 4x7 Segment Displays With 8051

10/23/2008 12:30 AM

i need to know how to multiplex the display, so that one seven segment is serviced after another, so fast, that the human eye cannot notice the flickering. using IC 4511 is pointless, as it needs 4 input lines for each digit. i came across a solution in Kenneth J. Ayala's book (pg. 254) but the code there makes no sense. how can the base of a PNP transistor be connected to an output pin of the 8051?

The easiest way is to use a serial driver chip or use a display module with serial input.
I 'm not at work yet so I can't give numbers, I'll post 'em later if you want.

We use the LITEON LTM8328GKR-04 this is a green display, the contrast is improved if you colour it over with a translucent green pen! (Improves the contrast ratio )

The old driver chip I used is obsolete, but this one might do it.

MM5450YN 34-segment LED Display Driver serial loaded. Farnell part no 121 3480

You may find a standard 16character 1 line LCD display with backlight is more versatile and no more expensive, the interface is parallell 8 bit (or 4bit).

I hvnt read that book, but its not difficult.

you can either pnp or npn transistors as power output driver. they are only nornal and not relationship.

one digital was given out 12ms at maxium time. thats all.

no matter what chip you use.

i wanna know, a PNP transistor, if connected to the 8051, say at port pin 1.0, the base of the transistor is to be connected to the port, correct? but the base requires -ve voltage, ie current to be sourced out of it. when the port 1 of 8051 mcu, is configured as an input, does it have the capacity to sink enough current so as to turn the transistor 'on', without getting damaged in the process? have a look at this image: http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/6548/ayalaaz6.png notice how pins p1.0 to p1.6 are connected to the MCU, is that gonna work if i configure port 1 as an input?

Here is a website that might help you, they have a section of the forums just for microcontrollers etc. Also, have you looked into "charlie-plexing"?

Here's one of the best 8051 sites on the net:

http://www.8052.com/forum/ and another website that has good info is here:
