Nitrous Oxide Gas Absorber

10/23/2008 11:38 AM

We need help solving a problem. We produce a saturated salt solution that is generating nitrous oxide which is bleaching fabrics nearby. We cannot reformulate but must absorb the nitrous oxide gas. The levels are about 20 ppm or less. Zeolite has been identified as a candidate because it is in use by power plants, auto exhaust etc. I cannot seem to track it down to find a source of a powder or other form that could be incorporated into our product. Any help appreciated!

Invite some local college students over to an open house.

Have you thought about containment or even capture and sell to the students mentioned above.

Activated charcoal is another common filter material that is readily available but I am not sure how it would work on nitrous oxide gas.

You can buy zeolite here:

http://www.bearriverzeolite.com/

Or, for small quantities, an aquarium supply retailer:

Try looking under "molecular sieve".

Why are you exposing anything to 20 ppm NO? Exhaust to a scubber. Seperate the effected zone. ENGINEER THE PROCESS>>>>>

chemistry is your friend. Nirous oxide will ionize in water allowing free H+ ions, it's called nitric acid. Some NaOH mixed while monitoring pH should solve it.

You can't get gases out of a water solution with zeolites. You can boil the solution or pull an absolute vacuum to get gases out, but I believe the nitrous oxides are dissosociating in an acid base reaction. which you see as bleaching.

Vicini,

Sorry to correct you, but nitrous oxide (N2O) does not form nitric acid with water. You are thinking of nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

The term "absolute vacuum" means a complete absence of anything. It is not attainable in the real world, and certainly not over a liquid.

Bleaching is an example of an oxidation reaction, not acid-base.

the poster is not a chemist as per his other posts. I gave lay answers, you know the difference between acid wash and bleaching, but does the poster? Yo belive the poster is absolutely correct in his N2O vesus NO3-- ???? They are making a brine, where in the world are they getting a N2O. Heck in my business we just call oxides of nitrogen NOx, because we can't controll the reactions. The mixture will combine with water and make nitric acid that will remove color from certain dyes.
