Which burns calories faster: Biking or Walking?

10/25/2008 1:07 PM

A design dispute has arisen as to which activity burns more calories, walking a mile or riding a bicycle for a mile.

I'm not interested in efficiency of transportation.

What is wanted is:

1. Some idea as to which of these two activities is best in terms of physical benefits (muscle tone) for a given investment of time.

2. which of these two raises the metabolic rate higher to burn calories in any given moment.

Thanks

L. J.

I would think all things being equal, that is, on the flat and level, traveling at the same speed, you would burn more calories walking. At least from the point that you are standing and not sitting. You do have to figure in the weight of the bike, which may make things closer. You may own a 40lb Wal-mart Huffy, or, like me, a high end 16lb, $3700 Ti frame beauty(Litespeed), could also be a factor. But I'll still stick with burning more walking at 2mph. My personal experience is that biking along side someone walking, I use more energy chewing gum.

However, tooling along said mile at 15mph uses many times the energy as walking.

I stuck at work writing a boring report, (which I should be getting back to and not F-ingO at CR4), I would much rather doing ether on this warm Saturday afternoon here in the People's Republic.

Guys,

Surely this is time related, walking will take around 20 minutes for a mile.

Cycling will take around 5 minutes for a mile.

Adjust these times to your own fitness - but it is surely true that a mile will be covered much quicker and easier on bike than on foot. I am assuming that the person doing the walking/cycling is trying just as hard for each activity.

Also remeber that in an Ironman triathlon, the entrant does 3 plus miles in the water followed by 120 miles plus on the bike followed by a Marathon.

Again it looks to me as though total effort walking/cycling is about 4 to 1.

Also covers the other input above that notes that cycling is easier as you remain seated!

The only way to really solve the issue is to get a number of folk together, put Pulse meters on them and set them walking and cycling alternately for 2, 3 or 5 miles each on each discipline. Sounds like fun for a group of college kids! use the Pulse meters to ensure thattheir effort is reasonable and that nobody ends up killling themselves.

You could even try it at different pulse rates, 100, then 120, then 140 and so on.

That should sort it,

Sleepy

First of all eat less calories so you have to burn less. Avoid junk food, choclates, cakes, burgers.etc.How about Yoga?, I would prefer walking as all the parts of body get excersie. You would rather burn more calories by walking than cycling.

I would prefer walking to biking too, but I have arthritis in my feet, so I would rather bike for 3 hours than walk 1 mile.

well Biking is faster, burns more callories and is less demanding on the joints and cartilage, per mile maybe walking burns more callories but as mentioned before you do more miles on a bike then when you walk.

Your question was which burns more calories per mile, but your reason was to learn which is more time efficient.

On level or near level ground cycling burns fewer calories per mile unless you're really pushing it. You will, however, cover many more miles in a given time.

Walking will burn more calories per mile than casual biking, but you're traveling 3-4 mi/hr instead of 10-15 mi/hr.

I think the answer will be to bike hard, preferrably on a course that's uphill in both directions.

Re: Which burns calories faster: Biking or Walking?

OK, here's the deal.

Doing a cardiovascular exercise for a long duration causes your body to store calories instead of burning them off.

What goes into effect is your fight or flight mechanism.

A long duration exercise will trigger your body into storing energy in the event that you'll have to expose yourself to the same exertion the next day.

If you want to burn calories. Short exertions are better.

Weight lifting burns more calories then long bike rides and long walks or running.

It's hard muscle that burns the fat. The longer you hold your muscles in a flexed position, slowing moving and holding for a 20 second period then taking 20 seconds to get to a relaxed position before starting your next repetition will trigger burning the fat without triggering the fight or flight mechanism.

So that is why marathon runners look so fat?

once sporter stop sport, he will fat as fast as possible.

its truth.

the best way to lose weight is hungry. if you insist on diet a little every day, any lady can be as slim as a match, as well as gentlman.

neednt burn fat. because no residual calories to burn.

In which catagory? deadlifters and weight lifters in the higher weight classes have certainly more body fat percentage then marathon runners, any fat on a marathon runner would slow him/her down

Running for long distances causes your body to store energy. If that energy isn't used it is stored as fat.

Don't be fooled by the size differences between a weightlifter and a marathon runner.

And we're talking about people that eat balanced meals.

Lean for Lean the weight lifter has a lower body fat percentage.

The reason is because the work out is in short bursts instead of being over a long long duration.

Not only do exercise programs explain this but it is also covered in behavioral science under the Fight and Flight mechanism of the human body.

Using that fuzzy math again eh?

What is a long duration? What effect a long duration without caloric intake?

From my experience of discussing with dietician, I feel, brisk walking for one mile is always more effective in burning calories than one mile cycling. However, I am not sure about muscle development process. If you look, the blood sugar patients are always advised to walk to burn calories rather than cycling, gyming or running.

Laughing Jaguar,

Hi,

you have had several responses, are we providing any useful responses or does the question need modifying to get closer to what you are trying to achieve?

If the question needs modifying slightly you might get more useful responses; I have avoided sending any more material whilst this shakes itself out.
