Relay Settings

10/11/2006 5:32 PM

What is the main difference between the 50G and 50N settings. I know the 50G is for zero sequence ground fault taking signal from zero-sequence CT, and the 50N is a residual current from the sum of three CTs. But considering for relay settings are we treating them the same or is there different consideration and study has to be made between these two setting.

Both sense the e/f currents.50N is the representation for main earth fault relay, while the 50G is the standby E/F relay (as a back up for the main earth fault relay). The purpose is same. Some time discrimination is maintained between the two to ensure a proper back up for the main earth fault relay.

If you have a resistance grounded system, a 50N may not see enough ground current to trip properly. If you do not have a resistance grounded system, a 50G may create nuisance tripping.
