5vdc input to 15vdc split output supply

10/28/2008 12:46 PM

i have a question here about a dc-dc split supply,i want to design a 5vdc input to +15vdc&-15vdc in other words a split supply output using only either of op-amps,inductors,resistors,capacitors,transistors,555 timer but not regulators or a transformer but i can't get it right as i used a one lm741 op-amp and the voltage dropped, but when i tried using three op-amps i got a very high dc value output of kv please help tuckle this asp.

kV out of a '741 with no transformer? I'd like to see that circuit!

What kind of current do you need and why not just buy a dc to dc converter module?

You seem a bit confused. I can not see you getting KV from a 741. There is a possiblity of som high voltage spikes from an inductive kick or flyback effect but KV would be alot to get from components that braek down at low voltage. Anyway you should look into a boost regulator design. It can be implemented using the components you listed, might need a few diodes as well. It is much easier to do with a dedicated IC but a 555 will give you a clock, op-amp for error amp, transistor switches, divider reference etc... It can be done.

Google "Boost Regulator" and/or "Switching Regulator Design" etc...You'll find a lot of info.
