Generaly speaking EMD had begun as building Street Cars way back in the day, they eventualy grew into the train giant they are now.

Simply put you have a diesel powered generator powering DC motors geared to turn the wheels. Air compressors are also driven by the engine for brake air. Up untill recently there realy was only DC systems used in this application but now the industry has advanced into AC drives.

Most Drilling rigs (electric powered), large dredges, and Diesel Electric oil field support vessels working in or that were built or designed in the US are all using the exact same technology as you will find in a Diesel Train. In fact most incorporate all EMD engines, generators, and dc motors.
