Three-Phase AC Load

Hello to everyone,

I have to characterize a DC/AC converter, in terms of efficiency, suited for motor control applications up to 15kW. Could you suggest to me a brand/manufacturers of three phase ac load.The AC load's input voltage is 380AC, it should allow me to set the power factor and a fine load adjustment, input frequency up to 100Hz. Another question is: a test bench is more suitable for such kind of test? I think that the Ac load is space saving but it allow me to perform the same tests than the test bench. Hope the information are enough for having an answer, anyway I'm available for providing you some more information. Please let me know

My Friend,

Allen Bradley (AB) & Siemens Variable Frequency Drive (Drives) can be utilized for your problem. Is allow you for 380VAC rated power supply motor. You can trim the speed (based on your requirements). You can also monitor and adjust power factor (but, usually these drives are for energy saving type.

Bench testing (calibration) is available with the same products.

By the way, Converter is for AC to DC conversion and DC to AC is Inverter.

It depends on how finely you want to control the load and what types of tests you want.

These tests are usually dome using a motor and a water cooled brake assembly. Some people have all electrical dynamo meters to regenerate the energy but if you only have a few short tests, don't worry about the cost of the energy.

Instead of the mechanical break, you could use a water pump and a suitable reservoir. The power to the load can be controlled by a throttle valve at the pump outlet. You can always add some line reactors to decrease the motor power factor. Do not add capacitor banks blindly as the inverter might not accept it.

The above solutions are limited in the range that can be controlled.

If you want to control power, power factor, and harmonics, we can sell you a fully controllable electronic load (up to 1MW) but it will cost much more than a motor and a pump.

I tested the inverter with a water pump and chancing the load by a valve but I found a very limited range in the output power and a variation of the power factor. I think that a AC electronic load is a better way to characterize an inverter in deeply way, even if more expensive, you can set the same power factor value at different loading conditions and try to evaluate how the IGBTs and freeweel diodes of the inverter contribute at the efficiency at different load conditions, switching frequency and DC bus voltage. So if you can please make me an offer for a 3-phase AC electronic load up to 15kW or suggest to me an AC electronic load manufacturer .
