Piping Connection

10/31/2008 3:30 AM

Can swing check valve or any other manual valve 0f Cl800 (SW) be connected with 2" bevel end pipe (XS,BBE,A53/A106/5L) from both ends . We use plain end pipe for SW connection . Is this mandatory requirement or connections are completed at site ?

Yes you can use Bevel End pipe with Socket Weld fittings or Socket Weld valves but it is not recommended.

You ask "Why?"

In the construction of the Socket Weld you insert the pipe (normally with a plain end) into the Socket until it bottoms out. Then you pull the pipe back 1/16" before you start making the weld. This forms a "gap" between the end of the pipe and the bottom of the socket. This gap is required because the pipe will expand due to the heat of the welding process and the end could bottom-out again and break the weld you are trying to make.

Later the gap you made can and will collect material from the process fluid or gas. If you use bevel end pipe for a socket weld joint you just end up with a larger void that collects junk. Depending on the commodity it is just a bigger place for corrosion to occur.
