Voice Command in AutoCad

10/12/2006 10:57 AM

Does any one know of a software method of giving commands in AutoCad? I spend an average of threee hours perday on AutoCad designing buildings and other structures. I find that I could be some 5 t0 10% more efficient if I could use eight to ten voice commands.

Hi, sorry I'm not registered, but I saw your question and I might just have a solution for you. It's going to sound crazy, and it might not work (I've never actually used it), but I recall a program that someone mentioned that allowed you to convert voice commands into keystrokes or activate macros. I learned of it as a sort of home-made addon for a computer game called Silent Hunter III, where you serve as a U-boat commander. The idea was that you would literally speak the orders to your sailors instead of having to fool around with the buttons for added realism. There's a possibility you might be able to get it to work with AutoCAD, but I won't guarantee anything. The link for the program is posted below. It's called Shoot. If you get it to work, let me know. I hadn't really thought about using voice commands to speed things up (I'm pretty fast with the keyboard). From the looks of it, it'll take about 60 mb to install everything you need.

Thanks for your reply. Others have suggested than voice commands will take longer to process than to use refined hot keys. I will invest some time with that method.

Thanks again.

I been using Autocad for over 10 years , and 5 with Inventor. Hot keys are the fastest don't use icons if you don't have to. Voice commands I would think take longer to process than your brain to your fingers, On top of that, picture all these cubicals with people saying , line , circle, trim, dim, undo. You get the idea

I have been using the full range of AutoDesk products since 1.6 release of AutoCAD (25 years) and I agree. Nothing is as fast as fingertips and macros. Rewrite the menu to fit your mindset and you can be the fastest operator around!!!!!

Thanks for your advice. I here that voice commands take longer to process than key commands which would defeat the purpose. Using hot key redefined appears to be the answer.

Yes Jim, I get the idea...

I would be an ungodly noise to contend with...cubical clatter worthy of Dilbert.

I shall be taking your advice and redefining my hot keys.

Thanks.

In case you REALLY want voice commands...

Use Dragon Naturally Speaking (DNS) -- you'll likely need the professional version

www.nuance.com

and then checkout Aliph's Jawbone -- or get a very good unidirectional microphone to talk into...

http://www.jawbone.com/try_me/

This combination above seems to work OK with lots of background noise -- don't raise your bar of expectation too high. Speech to text is not quite good enough yet. The advantage of the Pro version of DNS is that you can create a small (concise) vocabulary to instruct the CAD program to do what you want.

Good luck!
