Puncturing Aerosol Can to Bleed Off Pressure

11/03/2008 11:28 AM

Sorry...forgot to log in the 1st time around.

I have a couple cans of Triflow lubricant (expensive as far as spray lube goes) that fell off the workshop shelf resulting in the plastic nozzle stem breaking off at entry to the can. The construction of the can does not lend itself to removing/reaplcing the nozzle/stem. As such, I want to puncture the can to bleed off internal pressure and cut the can open to recover the lubricant for use in a hand pump sprayer.

Any suggestions on how to safely open the can? Thanks in advance for your input.

This will do the trick....

Works from a safe distance too.

Can't recapture the lubricant like that it will run into the grass.

Yeah, that tool is OK I suppose.

But then you have to walk over and get the can. Who has the time or energy for that? What you need is one of these ACME Can Puncturing Units. Once the can is empty you just pull it to you with the attached rope!

Don't even think about it!!!! The contents are pressurized. Any attempt to puncture the cans will result in explosive decompression that can cause serious, possibly fatal injuries to your staff.

Go to an A/C wholesaler, or a automotive tool truck. There is a device that snaps around a small disposable freon can to allow faster charging. They will snap around your damaged can, and pierce the side wall. Then you can use the needle valve and hose you attached to it to spray your Triflow. If you have trouble finding it let me know.

Good answer, btw it's called a "side tapper" in the trade. He could also use it to bleed off the pressure, then puncture another hole and empty the contents into another container.

That's the 'collective knowledge' answer he was looking for.

Greetings from the other side of the County. Yep, that definitely sounds like the kind of advice the original poster wanted.

I have done this many times with no trouble whatsoever- simply find a nail of close fit to the broken off tube diameter- push in till meets resistance- then tap the head of nail gently- the gas propellant inside(Butane or Propane these days- usually) will escape slowly- when no more hiss- tap nail right in, withdraw- can usually pour contents out of hole- if not enlarge.

I'm leaning towards the design used in #3. I believe I can use the can piercing device in one of my air cannons.

Better not to do this, or at least do it very very carefully. It is possible for the nail to be ejected very rapidly. "You'll put your eye out!"

I always wonder how we all survived before our mom's started reading these sites and saying...."oh dont do that...it is dangerous." Yes,we know.

i am 57 and we were burning stuff, blowinh stuff up, cutting stuff, shooting things by age 12. The rules are easy. Keep your fingers and face and eyes away from the danger. In this case....we dropped a cinderblock off of the garage roof....and itsmooshed the can! We were nice and safe up on the garage roof. We certainly werent going to fool around and spill any of the beer we had "borrowed" from our dad's.

every year, you hear about people blowing their fingers off witn m-80s. Well, i bet none of those folks thought....."hmmm, i wonder if the fuse is fast or slow? You know what....let us light one ....on the ground....with a long stick....and then run...then we can see." Answer....they are fast fuses. So, we never held them in our hand while trying to lightthe fuse.....and then try to throw it before it blows up. That was for amateurs. We had 4-5 foot metal poles with a little basket at the end to send them on their merry way.

and lastly, what boy didn't build a potato cannon or a tennis ball cannon? In my day we took the metal (yes metal) tennis ball container ....drilled a hole (with our dads' dangerous electric drill....near the bottom....squirted in some lighter fluid ..

swirled it around real fast ..... dropped a tennis ball in ...and then lit the hole where we had just put the flameable....and now very agitated ....butane. Boom...!!! The first time the ball went 60 feet in the air! After that, we had tennis ball cannon wars all summer....shooting across the street at each other. The second rule was....light the cannon with a 12" wick or something...we didnt want to lose any fingers....and, of course, we had our safety gear of shorts, t-zsjirt, baseball cap and sunglasses for protection. Rule #1? Can you guess? Hint...think firearms....that is correct? Never put anything in front of the cannon. Oh sure, it was funny if you got shot in the rear end from 25 feet...but nobody ever leaned over to look down into the barrell! I mean, that would be crazy right? We were dangerous, but we also had common sense and a desire not to get hurt and that made us safe.

Fast forward about 30 years and I am now a dad with my 10 year old and I'm reading about a high school where the teacher did the tennis ball cannon experiment with PVC pipe but because he wanted to burn something clean and not dirty like gasoline ...he used ethanol. Well, they used the canon and it worked perfectly and while everybody was congratulating themselves...one poor student, who obviously had been bubble wrapped since birth, leaned over to look Down the pipe. Now, I must admit that even though rule number one prohibits this type of conduct I could see how this mistake happens because the student just saw the cannon shoot. So, he's thinking it Hass to be empty. This means he never met my friend Tony who could get a second load in there and get that butane swirling around and light it before the first bowl even came down. But I digress. the poor young student, leaned over the pvc pipe canon and looked and took a breath. Unfortunately, since ethanol burns perfectly clean, the student could not see the flame and that's what Went into his lungs.

I also have noticed that there was a different code in those days. We didn't have the safety police like we do now, but we had our body or sometimes it was us grabbing our body and saying no don't do that or even just grabbing your hand before you grabbed a moving chain ....in other words we saved each other without ever saying...that is not safe....because that is why we were there in the first place.

My sons knew about guns by age 12. If i said, "a gun is what?" They would repeat..."always Loadec dad...we know." I am happy to report that twice.... One of their friends came out brandishing his parents pistol or shotgun was pointed it around the room and my sons immediately move them selves out of the path of where the pistol was pointed took the firearm and then unloaded it. On both occasions the other kid said, "oh my God I thought it was not loaded."

Anyway, have fun doing dangerous stuff... but dont be foolish. Maybe an 8 foot 2x4 with a nail after letting all the pressure out :)

I can only imagine your description. I would find me a very small pick, and see if I could dig that stem out and replace it. I would even call manufacturer for assistance. If the stuff is expensive, they have probably had the complaint before.
