Need help repairing HDTV

11/11/2008 12:56 AM

Hey everybody I'm new to this forum and today was my first day with an HDTV set in my house. I found a Polaroid FLM-4234BH LCD at the recycling center that was in perfect condition. Got it home and used a power cord for a computer to power it up. The only problem I noticed with it after plugging in my cable and DVD player was the picture seemed pixelated and the color is similar to that of an infrared image. I did some searching online and found the same problem on a Polaroid FLM-3734B. A recommended suggestion was to replace the video or LCD control board. Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences with this issue and could provide some information on how to fix my problem?

Thanks

Yeah it was a lucky find at the village recycle center in a southwest suburb of Chicago. I could not believe it either.

Yeah, Americans used to have a lot of money. Now reality is setting in; we've got debt, not money. But some people are just plain stupid too!

I was thinking along that line, the original poster may have to send the system to a competent repair technician.

cheers,

They didn't even throw it away, they gently placed it there because there is no damage at all to it. I haven't called around yet for prices about bringing it to a repair facility but I have been reading that very few people repair this brand of TV's. I'll probably start calling around next week if the power of the Internet can't help me.

Odds are the poor image quality is why it ended up there. There is a possibility the original owner couldn't get it fixed, or at least not economically, so don't get your hopes up too high...

That's a distinct possibility as Polaroid is not what you would call a major manufacturer of anything anymore. On the other hand if you can do a board level repair that might be economical. Or find a second unit to scavenge for parts. Hey, you never know.

Yeah, I concur. Come to think of it, I've never even heard of a Polaroid television before. That part didn't register until you mentioned it again...

alkaline,

The problem probably does lie in the controller boards. You should definitely look at the board and see if there is obvious physical damage or loose connections. If the problem is in one of the integrated circuits it is not easy to fix. You will be dealing with very fine pitch pins or even ball grid arrays, both of which take specialized equipment to rework. A replacement board is probably in order in this case.

While we may decry the throwaway society we have become, we should also realize how much complexity and design are in these products.

No I'm not going to get my hopes at all. When I first saw it I was second guessing myself on whether to take it or not. Even if I don't/can't fix it, it'll at least be fun taking it apart and seeing what they're all about.

alkaline,

Before you trash the thing - see what you can determine about the power supplies. Be beaucoup careful though - if it is an offline switcher the voltages can be deadly. Maybe seek some help on this part. The point of all this is that a low or missing supply voltage may be causing the problems you describe.

careful and good luck

Your Lcd - HDTV have brightness / contrast control system failure or drop current problem, maybe if you re-soldering the circuit will fix the problem or maybe you must change some bad capacitor and resistor.

yes!!!!! always...always check the power supply system... yes, system... they are becomming more complicated these days... I have seen good and expensive parts needlessly replaced because, a "know-it-all" has a quicker way of doing it!? An hour long repair, could have been done in 5 min. by replacing a fuse... just by checking the voltage reading on the power supply!

If you don't know what your doing... stay out of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

20 years as a repair technician...

good luck!!

Yeah, I'm actually going to college for computers and one professor said the power supplies are usually the weakest link on circuits these days. Also, I have a pretty good idea of whats going on inside so any technical advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
