Can anybody tell how automatic power factor correction is attained. Does anybody have a selection criterion of how much KVAR is needed or something like that??

Most of the power system loads are Inductive which results into flow of lagging reactive current in the system. This in turn burdents the transmission and distribution network. Ideal conditions for any power system is to have Unity power factor. Hence this lagging current is compensated by introducing leading reactive (capacitive) current which is done by connecting Power factor correction capacitors in the network.

The details of how much KVAR is required will depend upon the lagging PF of your load without compensation and the improvement in this PF that you are looking for. You can check websites of Capacitor manufacturers which gives the chart for various combinations.
