Underwater Pressure Sensor

11/11/2008 4:22 PM

Hello. I'll first start off by giving a quick over view of my project. Any ideas for any part of the project are always welcome.

I'm building an Underwater Propulsion Device, or actually just a model of one for the moment. This device is meant to pull the user underwater by use of a motor and impeller. It can be used by either scuba divers or skin divers. For this model, the motor will not do much work, but is rather just to show that it turns on when it's supposed to. The power source will be a series of dry cell batteries (which are able to go upside down) and will also be able to be recharged.

The enclosure for the whole thing will most likely be made from carbon fiber and will have to be watertight. There will be an LCD display which will be controlled by a microcontroller (some variance of the 8051). There will also be a pressure sensor connected to the micro controller which will control whether the motor will turn on, and also the depth will be displayed on the LCD screen.

Right now, this is my problem. Actually finding a pressure sensor that can be underwater at depths up to 130 ft. I'm thinking a sensor with a range of 0-100 psi will be more than adequate. I would think digi-key would have some, but i havn't had any luck. Does anyone have any idea of where I could get a digital pressure sensor that would meet these needs? Thanks!

At $500 a pop, they're not cheap. But anything that travels underwater never is.

Good luck with your quest.

Is this the kind of thing you are designing? If so, try the same supplyers as supplied any pressure guages for these 'sea scooters'. You are going down to ~ 4 Atm, so 0-100 would more than cover your needs as you rightly say. I leave the sea scooter page in case it may be of help. http://www.seascootershop.com/?gclid=CPTo_s7Q9ZYCFRSO1Qod8XGjYQ
