Continuous/ Resetable mesurement counter for lineal footage calculations

11/16/2008 3:56 PM

Hi all,

I am having a hard time locating something to measure the footage of cast copper rod as it is being cast and coiled(accurately?) We are currently using a magnetic sensor to count the revolutions of the main coil roller shaft. The problem is that the shaft has two lobes and 1 revolution is a 2 count on the meter. The other issue is if any slippage should occur (good ol' Murphy), that amount of product goes through with out being counted and thus a over sized coil will happen, wich then needs to be weighed and cut off for remelt or scrap( lost$$$$$). I am hoping to find smoekind of wheel based electronic setup to mount in the path of the cast rod and ride gently on it giving me a more precise footage count. I am also open to the idea of some type of "vision system" measuement but here again the all mighty dollar needs to be kept at a minimum for the first one as I have 36 coilers that need it. I am looking for some thing I can maybe program to automatically convert the lineal footage into pounds so the operator's know when the best time to cut the product and switch to a new pallet. I have searched unfortunately to only find extremely expensive laser systems so far but will keep looking .

Thank you all

I've used Redington's wheel unit and it worked nicely for what I was after.

Based on what you are after, I would simply give Redington a call and explain what you are doing and what you need. Be prepared to give them the info they would need for the conversion formula to give your product weight.

Personally I think it would work well if an operator could select either length or weight at a push of a button.

Good luck.

Hi,

Go look for cable measuring systems. Nearly every electrical outlet has one so they cant be expensive. They will be calibrated in metres or feet but by replacing the wheel with a diameter chosen for your weight you may be able to effectively calibrate for weight.

regards

Chas

JCD Sparks,

Are you looking to automate the process of measurement & cutting? Or are you mainly concerned in obtaining more accurate (and precise) linear measurement, with a person viewing the measurement readout, and cutting as appropriate?

If the latter, you may find that an electronic rolling tape measure may be modified to suit your needs.

While not the only company, Keson makes one (available for around $150):

AVTRON makes a very rugged series of encoders for severe industrial environments, that are highy accurate. 360 pulses per revolution and more.

Hello JCD_Sparks:

Can you please tell me when you need to measure the copper, is it rod, or wire? And is it hot, warm, cold?

I have in mind a series of PIR sensors linked to a computer and something similar.

You could have a read-out between every other machine so you would need 16 or so.

So one person can veiw what is happening on both machines, if that is how you have it set up. Or, collect the info' at a central point which receives each read-out from each machine, and have a list of each machine on screen with the current measured wire which has spooled at that time. This could also allow for some automation of the process of measuring and cutting. Or you may prefer to have this done by hand.

Let me know what you think OK?
