Biogas from Algae

11/18/2008 5:48 PM

I am looking for anyone who has experience in creating methane from algae. I have spoken with a lot of companies that use anaerobic digesters to create methane with a lot of different types of feedstock, but nobody that has worked with large amounts of algae. Anyone have any suggestions on who to talk to?

Kate did a nice piece on this subject back in April. Check it out:

The production of methane from algae is usually not a one-step process. It requires the manipulation of a set of bioreactions beginning with the treatment of algae as simply sources of cellulose, with the object of maximizing the output of acetic acid and acetates which are then subjected to methanogenic reaction to produce methane. Conceptual discussion is provided at our website at this page:

I hope this is helpful good luck

The following is the text of an e-mail a friend sent me in July.

In January of this year, at a meeting of the Engineers Club of Sun City, Arizona. A.P.S. (the local power company) gave a presentation in which they explained their plans to build such a plant south of Phoenix , below Gila Bend. They were very upbeat about it's possibilities.

If you have very large quantities - Destructive distilation could be the route. The result woud probably be Methanol rather than methane and if would be in liquid form rather than a gas. If you wanted to use the methane as a fuel why not just dry out the algae and burn it as a liquified powder. All you are doing is recycling the solar energy used to convert the CO2 in the first place.

You might see if you can get in contact with someone at one of our Kansas utility companies, they are trying to get a large-scale setup using algae to reduce the carbon and nitrogen emissions from their power generation activities.

This link is a newsletter that touches on the project, from there you could visit their main site, and get some contact information.

I suggest you go to:

As I recall, this discusses oil from algae, but it is a place to start.

Hi, I worked with anaerobic digestion of red algae harvested from the Baltic Sea for about one year in a laboratory scale investigation. You can find my publication here: "http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-51338" with best regards, Rajib Biswas, PhD Fellow, Copenhagen, Denmark.

I am working on a project in Denmark to construct a biogas plant, which is going to be fed with algae, citrus pulp (waste product from food industry) and sludge from waste water treatment. I'm aware of a project in Sweden, where algae is going to be utilized for methane production as well -google: "biogas trelleborg" for information.

My name is Anders Fredenslund. contact info: afredenslund@gmail.com

I am actually looking for an opportunity to do some research on gasification of algal oil. I would like you to contact Shapphire Energy because apparently they are doing extensive research on algae as a source of biofuel. They might help you
