Allowable Radiation in Metal

11/20/2008 11:16 AM

Dear All ,

Will any body tell me what is the allowable radiation in term of micro radiation per hour (μR /hr.) on internationally acceptable level.Any perticular standard avilable for this, which is the right instrument to check it.

Than you.

What is your local background?

We put a geiger counter at the tube that delivered our melt samples to our lab so that every sample went past the detector tube. If a melt would have been radioactive, or a gamma ray source had been somehow engulfed by the melt, ewe';d have known while it was still in the ladle.

Don't remember our background. levels though. sorry.

(ps, we also put industrial detectors at gate for scrap ttrucks and beside switch for rail cars).

In accordance with federal radiation protection standards of 10 CFR Part 20, 100 mrem y-1 above background is the limit for exposure to the general public from man-made radioactive sources (other than exposures received for medical purposes). Source: health physics society.org milo

Hi vidyadhar deodhar,

Here in Europe the limits for common people are the same as indicated by Milo for the US, 1 mSv/year. Any area in which the overall dose could be greater must be identified and segregated as "Regulated area". This are common requirements of ICRP (International Commission for Radiation Protection)

The instruments are called "radiation dose rate meters".

It's a common practice too to check incoming vehicles with scrap to avoid melt a radiation source or contaminated scrap, as Milo said too.

In order to declassify radwaste and can manage it as normal waste (non radioactive), our present regulations depend on the type of isotope according to the following table (pasted from the Economy Ministry website):

I wish I could jumping so... Nice picture

BTW these copy and paste tools.... I've just seen on the table I pasted that the exponents are below the base (10) and smaller (as it's usual when right positioned) and the figures seems a bit strange...

Kind regards
