10/100 Network Interface Cards

11/20/2008 12:28 PM

Hello, everyone,

I came across this on ZNET:

Next-generation USB revealed

USB 3.0 has arrived, or at least the specification that allows the technology to start being built into devices. Offering data-transfer speeds up to 4.8 gigabits per second - that's 10 times the USB 2.0 speeds - USB 3.0 is also expected to offer better power efficiency.

That is all well and good, but considering all of the things that have changed on computers, both hardware and software, one components sticks out, glaringly: the Ubiquitous 10/100 Network Interface Card.

When do you think we will start to see a system that can break the 10/100 barrier, is very cheap, and will still maintain compatibility with 10/100 NIC's and Fax/Modems?

I figure "if this is one of my really dumb questions, I'd rather ask it here, whith my friends and family, than over at Spiceworks Desktop)

10/100/1000 Mbps NIC cards have been around for a while:

Indeed. A 10/100/1000 NIC is available from Newegg for $9.99. You aren't going to get a lot cheaper unless it comes built into your motherboard (and most do these days).

Hey, Guys, thank you all for your replies.

Of course, this leads to several more questions.

Do I need a special Modem to get to 1000mbps?

Do I need a special service to get to 1,000?

How fast are DSL modems?

How fast are Cable modems?

What is the Capitol of Assyria?

How many coconut-laden, African Sparrows flight is that?

Thank you for your replies.
