Biomass, Moisture and impurities control

11/25/2008 2:41 AM

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone out there could share with me how are:

1. moisture content are controlled and maintained in an optimum level for a wood chips used as biomass fuels. I'm interested in looking at cheap solutions, with effective results.

2. methods of impurities control such as, fungus, insects, gravels.

I'm living in a tropical country, so moisture and impurities are a major issue from me. The above 2 issues, comprimises my burning efficiency and weight input.

Welcome to CR4 devanns,

I don't know about the second issue but only the gravel is not biomass.

On the first issue apply a vacuum to your feed stock and the water will boil off at much lower heat.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for the response.

Actually, I'm trying find ways to control moisture content in a biomass product called Palm Kurnell Shell (PKS), which is a waste product from Palm fruit bunch.

My stockpile is located in a tropical country which expalins why I'll need to control moisture within 12% or less.

As for the impurities, fungus, insects and stones (size ranging from 30~40mm diameter) is pain.

Vacuum sounds like a plan, but how do I apply vacuum to a stockpile, which is ranging from 25000~30000ton. I have power limitation, because my stockpile is on an open field. But I enough manpower, anyway we can make them useful?

For the insects and fungus, I'm planning on fummigation. But how do I get rid of rocks for a stocpile that huge.

Desperately need an answer.

How about a trommel screen for the rocks. Use a trommel screen that has a 30 - 40 mm screen. Is the product larger or smaller than the 30-40 mm?

Are you turning the pile? This should help to control the moisture. Everytime you turn the pile you lose moisture. What is the end product?

I work in the recycling/compost/mulch industry we experience similar problems when making our products.
