Cable Modem Problems

11/25/2008 7:32 AM

Hello,

My Dad has cable modem internet, but lately has been experiencing problems with his internet connection. He is supposed to have a 3meg connection but rarely gets over 1.5meg on it. He has a wireless router with two computors wired into it but on different ends of the house. The computor at the far end can get around 2500kbps download, but as soon as he turns the den computor on the connection speed drops and neither computor can get over 600 or 700kbps. He's even changed routers and still gets the same problem. Does anyone have an idea as to what's causing the problem?

Thanks

tclark,

Any number of things could be causing this from local congestion, source site limitations, bad CAT5, someone leeching off your wireless (you are using WPA2 I hope), etc., etc. Try using this speed test at different times of day/night to see if it's local congestion : http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest

There are also a number of tweaks for broadband connections on the site.

You could also try downloading Ubuntu 8.10 using Bittorrent, after 20 minutes or so you should see several hundred seeds and your d/l bandwidth should be saturated.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply. No problem with leechers because Dad lives out in the woods, that's unless we have high tech squirrels :). I'll try your suggestions tonight to see if we can get an improvement. What's Ubuntu 8.10?

Thanks for your time and help. :)

It's the latest Linux distribution and very popular right now on P2P. Perfectly legal to download.

I had the same trouble for about a year...every time the cable "tech" came out to check...all was fine..Most of the time the problem was early morning and around 9pm of an evening and weekends....

Long story short..there was a splice in the line between their box on the street and the house..( an 800' run underground )..and I am at the "end of the line"...moisture pulled down the signal early morning and after sundown to ground and weekends between upstream users and the ground , it was all I could do to stay online..

Wound up taking the computer to the street and tying into the box..no troubles....finally got a new line laid and haven't had a problem for 2 years now...

Well, problem solved (I hope). The cable tech went to my dads house yesterday and loooked things over. There was a loose cable connector on the of the cable and Dads PC had alot of programs running in the background. Neither he or the tech could figure out what they were but once they were shut down everything came up fine. He's now getting the 3meg connection he's paying for.

Thanks Guys for your help.

Hello tclark, If your dad had a lot of background programs running the machine there maybe some virus or Trojan programs. If you are not running anti-virus software and or ad-aware, spy blaster, and spy bot search and destroy. it would be wise to look into some.

If you are running anti-virus software you may want to check it is up to date and no settings have be turn down or off.

I just had the same issue. Call the cable company and have them reset the modem from their end. That might do the trick - it did for me.

For some reason simply resetting the modem with the pin switch on the back did not accomplish the same thing. I have no idea why.

Cable modem resets are best accomplished by pulling the power plug for at least 30 seconds. To be sure everything comes back up alright I pull the router power at the same time and restart it after the modem is fully online.

After all that you may (or may not) have to restart the computers attached to the router, but that depends on the phase of the moon.

I have to restart my modem every time the cable company issues an emergency broadcast system test. It (the modem) locks up tight. I don't have a clue why and my current location is the first that I've ever had that happen.

That will work as long as you don't have a battery backup built into the modem. I agree with power cycling the router at the same time. I also hard boot the PCs and then bring everything up from the modem to the router to the PCs. That helps a bit.

My cable company loves to blame my router for everything. But then I just direct connect my main desktop to the modem and when nothing changes on "speedcheck" I give them the blame and they do a reset.

Interesting. I've never seen a cable modem with integrated battery backup, though I can see where that would be handy.

Yeah, the correct procedure is to power everything down, including computers, then power back up starting from the modem. I've found, though, that you can usually skip powering down the 'puters. Apparently, DHCP is pretty resilient.

I've taught Cox and Comcast techs a few things about configuring networks. Once, I had a new install at a new home and Cox insisted on having a tech come in to set up my system instead of just getting my modem mac address over the phone and plugging it into their system. After about a half hour of watching the tech fumble without being able to get my 'puter to connect, I let him know it was configured for a static IP and that DNS services were turned off. I then showed him how to set up DNS that is normally not disabled on a Windoze system. After he left I installed my router and put that machine back on static IP.

He thanked me for teaching him that bit. I shoulda charged Cox for the service.
