Carbon Fibre Properties

10/18/2006 7:14 AM

Can anybody give the details of the properties of carbon fibre? I want to replace steel fibre with this. Will that be feasible?

To put a positive spin on your question: YES, it is possible! There are many competent engineers who have devoted their professional lives to utilizing carbon fiber where metal or metal fibers have been used previously; so there is a good body of knowledge on the subject.

But, you will have to share much more information about your requirements and/or your application to determine what is truly feasible. Can you share more about what kind of properties are relevant?

You may want to review MatWeb, a GlobalSpec partner site. My search for 'carbon fiber' yielded the following result: http://www.matweb.com/search/GetKeyword.asp. I'm sure you will find valuable information there.

thanks for your response. we are making refractory products for steel industry. To give strength to the product, in some of the cases, we used steel fibres. we got few successes also. our R&D team is happy with that but I am not stisfied with the logic as the steel fibre become soft (or melt) when coming in the contact with the molten steel. So how can it give strength to the product which is meant to contain molten steel. For that reason I want to try carbon fibre or any other feasible option ( economical and performer) for the temperature above melting point of steel.

I believe you have a wonderful idea here and you should follow through on this effort. Carbon fiber is added to many mixtures (plastics, ceramics, rubber) as a means to strengthen the material. There are many suppliers, too.

I suggest that you review GlobalSpec's Directory of Carbon Fiber and Carbon Fiber Cloth suppliers. Two suppliers on that list who I know can help you are: Engineered Fibers Technology and SGL Carbon.
