Chemical composition of steel

11/27/2008 2:34 AM

What is the chemical composition of steel plate RSt 37-2.

Can we use general purpose steel plate (Mild steel plate) in place of RSt 37-2.

Is there any PDF documents available for steel chemical composition equivalent.

follow this link:

http://www.matweb.com/search/DataSheet.aspx?MatGUID=045930e40a0f43ec8b0935acd039761d

it's not my call, and i know nothing of the application, so i cannot give credible answer to your question, But i hope the link can help. MATWEB is a good site to get material information.

(i would suspect you could use a standard low carbon mild steel in place)

Hello syed.rizwan11:

Please forgive any duplication as I have not read the thread yet.

Can we use general purpose steel plate (Mild steel plate) in place of

RSt 37-2...... >>>>>>>>This is Mild Steel Plate !

This site give understandable clear detail on what your steel is made from.

Good luck...................

Hi...if you are in India try IS2062 Grade B plates as they are equal.

Hello,

As far as I know ST 37 in Germany is referred to as "Automaten Stahl" - which translates to "Steel for Automation machines", although it is general purpose steel, I am uncertain about the "R" and the "-2" I suspect that this steel could be comparable to CRS but not HRS, as the hot rolled steel generally is more mallable. It likely has a slightly different composition than 1008 - 1010 steel, possibly it is more similar to 1018-1020 (elevated carbon content).

I recommend to consult the "Stahl-Schluessel" - "Key to Steel" book or CD rom if your google searches have failed to give an exact answer. The Key to steel you can trust, as it is an inter continental equivalency index of the most common (and some uncommon) steel types and naming conventions.

I found the following link with the picture of the Book, although it is likely available also in larger tech reference libraries, as well as book-stores. http://www.normas.com/ASM/pages/KEYTOSTEEL.html

If you have some specific questions, please mail me direct, and I can see if I can help,

engineering@canstampconsulting.com

I hope this helps,

Kind regards,

Hi all,

After 4 days in the middle of nowhere I could come back.

RSt 37-2 plate is a structural "mild" carbon steel according to the old DIN 17100 standard. The "R" means "non rimming steel" so it must be at least semi-killed (The same standard covers the grade USt 37-2, which is the rimming one). The "37" means a nominal tensile strength of some 37 kgf/mm2 which were the units used some years ago.

The chemical composition is quite simple (up to 40 mm thickness): C < 0,17%; S and P < 0,05 each and N < 0,01.

Even here in Europe many people still use the old designations, but to be with times, is more adequate to talk of EN 10025 which is the present valid standard. For equivalent strength grade, you should select the S235JR.

Kind regards

Hello Kwetz:

Welcome back!

I have been looking for the exact meaning of the RSt 37-2 plate.

As you can perhaps see from my previous posts I said it was mild steel. But was trying to find out for certain what each letter and number meant. It is the 't' which had me.

Hello babybear

Here I am.

My knowledge of old DIN standards come from several years (80's) in which I was involved in the construction of a NPP with German (Siemens-KWU) technology.

BTW, the "t" comes with the "S": St means "Stahl" which is the German word for steel. Many other grades (fine grained.. used the same partial designation "St")

Have a good weekend

Hello Kwetz:

I suppose I should have figured that really? Thanks for telling me though. It is great when you know isn't it?.

And you have a good weekend also!

At the moment, I am typing by torch-light as the last Halogen Lamp I have has just blown! Oh for modern life with each room having a different type of lamp fitting!

Take care.............
