you cannot sum text. Just use an if statement.

Sorry I'm not 100% sure exactly what you want. However I think your answer may be HLOOKUP or VLOOKUP, where you can search a table of information for matches in either text or values, and retrieve your corresponding "designation" data.

If you click the Fx symbol next to the formula bar, type in hlookup and the help system describes how to use it.

Let us know if this is of use.

I am not exactly sure I understand what you want to do but I think it would look like this. If your spreadsheet is set up like this:

=Sumif(A$2:A$4,C2,B$2:B$4), the bounds of your array will depend on your data.

And you can just copy it down. I created a little spreadsheet and this was the result, you can see the formula in the toolbar.

Hope this helps, let me know if this not what you were looking for.

You might want to try Excel array formulas (also known as CSE formulas for Control Shift Enter). Here is a link that explains how to use them. http://www.mrexcel.com/tip011.shtml

The mrexcel.com forums are AMAZING...take a few minutes and explain in detail what you need and wait a couple minutes. My last question there got answered once per minute until I posted my thank-you to call off the hounds.

Nice one Terrapin! GA for that.

As I approach the autumn years of my life I find I have forgotten more than I now know. There are commands in Word, Excel and Autocad (especially) which are not even listed now but still function.

Array formula - used to use them exclusively. Now dragging formula is so easy I just forgot them!

As they say in NZ, for no obvious or rational reason, cool bananas.

For criteria enter the text between quotation marks; e.g. "text"
