Dear All,

Please explain me what would be consequences in synchronous generator if the power factor is maintained unity?

Only good stuff. The sun will come up on time, farmers will get all the rain they need, global warming will come to an end, sunspots will all disappear, world peace...

In short a power factor of 1 is exactly what you want (unless you are using some off the wall weird induction generator which requires VARS from the system for excitation)

Well , maybe 0.8 pf is what you want for best generator stability.

At nity pf you are rigt on the margin where underexciattion and system disturbances can cause pole slippage.

at 1pf, KW=KVA, hence less copper losses in the generator, as pf decreases from 1 to 0.8, the current increases proportionally, and the losses increase in the genset, see any genset manufactures efficiency curvers...

But due to Power factor corrected power supplies of Information technology equipments has created Power factor towards unity or leading also. We have seen UPS connected to these loads working on Leading power factor. We had to de-rate the UPS and load ( Because Ours are legacy UPS manufactured 4 years back for 0.8pf and filter is combination of harmonic filter and power factor improvement)

Our DG power factor is 0.9, because of high chiller and induction motor. But I would see unity power factor in near future. I really do not know how Generator manufacturers will align for this change as they are designed for 0.8pf lag.
