Search Engines and Spyware

12/04/2008 11:51 AM

Hi everyone,

Whenever I use a search engine, such as google, clicking on a link always brings me to an advert, for example, if I type in CR4, it comes up with copy-book.com first, and then re-directs me to http://www.search2save.co.uk/korg_cr4?ref=espotting&category=korg_cr4. Following that, I have to go back to google, and click the link again. Is there anything that I could do to make it work first time.

(The problem dosen't happen on any other PCs in the house)

I have Windows XP

Spybot Search and Destroy

AVG Free

and I use Firefox, but the problem occurs also on other browsers such as IE7 and google chrome.

Thanks, and please help

Sounds like what's known as a "browser hijacker". We've had those before (at home and at work) and they're not only annoying they're sometimes stubborn to eradicate. One PC at work resisted all fixes the IT Dept. threw at it.

Do a little reading on the subject. Here's one website, but there are many others.

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1579

In particular, look at the section concerning how to use hijacker-fighting tools "HijackThis" and "CWShredder".

Here are some links to a few people with the same problem and some steps to try to resolve it.

Looks like it might have messed with your DNS settings either in your computer or your router.

Does the problem still happen if you bypass the router and plug the computer directly into the modem? (assuming you're using a router)

If all else fails you could backup your files and wipe your hard drive.

FREE? From MicroSnot? There MUST be a hidden "gotcha" in it.

They'll have enough new revenue from their just released clothing line.

Also good for blowing your nose on, since its so "micro" SOFT (That's what it says on the packaging. Or is that a come-on for a mugger looking for an easy touch?).

Since the wedding night, Bill Gates' wife finally knows, why he called his company 'Microsoft'.

Sometimes we're compelled to do the right thing, even unknowingly. All is forgiven.
