is it possible to repair a hydro gear transaxle gear box

anything is possible....

and anything is repairable... given you weigh your time and recources vs the cost of just buying new.

cheers, thats how i feel, and the cost of buying new, is worth the attempt to fix it, if i cant, so what, scrap the gear box and buy a new one.

Ususaly the Ball Bearing that they use to move the internal levers of the trnsmission is what wears out or the yoke that fits around the Ball Bearing.

Repairing it it not that hard but when you take the access cover off a lot of small parts are suddenly loose and once moved they are a real pain to get back in place. It would take an ocopus to realign all the parts.

One medium sized ball bearing is what changes the gears.

thank you, this is real helpful, i am going to try and fix, it. and i was told that the bits might all fly out when i take off the top cover. so will have to get someone to help me try to put it back together. thanks again

You question is a little puzzling. Hydro-Gear is the largest producer of hydrostatic transmissions for lawn and garden tractors in the world and is located in Sullivan, Illinois. Their products are clearly marked with their company name. Tuff Torq is a Japanese company located in Morristown, Tennessee. They are the second largest producer of lawn and garden tractor transmissions. They also clearly mark their products with their name.

So, do you have a Hydro-Gear or a Tuff Torq hydrostatic transmission?

i have a hydro gear, but someone told me they are now owned by tuff torq, i could be wrong.

but i am in great britain, so i can only go through dealers, and they dont fix them, they just replace them.

my boss wants me to try and fix it, by getting spare parts.

Try to contact Hydro-Gear on line. They should be willing to send you an exploded parts diagram, and an instruction manual for repairing the model that you have. Armed with that information, you can decide weather you feel up to the task. And besides if you get it apart, and can not deal with the complexities, you can always buy the new one. Good luck.

Tuff Torq absolutely does not own Hydro-Gear. Hydro-Gear is a joint venture between Sauer-Danfoss and Agri-Fab, Inc., and is located in Sullivan, Illinois. Tuff Turq is a wholey owned subsudiary of Kanzaki Kokyukoki, which is owned by Yanmar, and is located in Morristown, Tennessee.

I strongly recommend you not suggest to the Hydro-Gear folks that they are owned by Tuff Torq!!!

Just stripped my hydrostatic on the countax for the 3rd time... Each time i'm getting more and more motion... (mine gets 300yds of use and gently slows to NO drive. Leave to cool and she is away again... Its not complex inside its just baffling... I have stretched springs, changed oils... Even stripped the hydro units.. Anyone has anymore idea's? Give me cogs anyday. Ha............

I have a countax C800 and the left rear wheel has just fallen off and the drive shaft coming out of the gear box has sheared. Is this repairable or do I need a new gear box as I have just been told (and quoted for about a £1000 or more)

Grateful for advice.

We also have the Tuff Torq diff in our Countax ride on lawn mower. This diff is also playing up with going forwards and backwards.

Just Wondering if anyone knows how much oil is spose to be inside them please?

The price we were quoted for a new diff for our mower was around the £450 mark,excluding VAT. Your diff might be off a bigger unit though.

There is a rubber plug on the top of the casing on ours,which has split and we think,has released some oil due to the slopes we have here to cut.Hence the lack of drive..

I dont think any of the hydros are made to handle hills (with a side tilt) with a but you can get parts for these if you have the model and serial number on the transaxle either through Tuff torq or Hydrogear or others. I understand tuff torq just changed to recomending a 5w50 heavier oil than the 15w30. but it seems like the hotter the transmission got, the thicker the oil would get. The problem is after they heat up. There has to be a balence between heat and vicosity. We have the same problem with them here in the US. they dont cool well covered in debris which wears the oil, which can't be drained

If a transaxle manufacturer agrees to make the thing without a drain screw to save the tractor maker 2 cents of manufactuing money and make them disposable (read: non-serviceable), it was probably garbage anyway (or the company that requested the "cheapest" specification is or both are).

It can be fixed, but will it be worth it in the end? Ask your self that question before you start on this one.
