1. Would this noise be affecting the operator?

If so, ear plugs, would be an option.

2. If the nose is affecting co-workers?

Ear plugs could be an option.

Isolating and insulating the work area would be another option.

Using a non iron or steel mallet could be an otion (brass, copper, rubber)

Please give us more info and the suggestions offered will be better.

1. description or picture of work place

2. budget limitations

3. who is affected by the noise

4. Is this hammering done by a machine or by a person with a mallet

thanks for help

Ear-plug already used at the working station,i am finding some engineerig change which reduce noise.Noise is produced during use of pointed cisel(like scrue driver) which has metal head and it is used for removal of denting on car body surface.Hammerind is done by man only.

You might want to repost this question in the Automotive section with your explanation of what you are doing. Maybe retitle it as Noisy dent removal.

There are several companies in the USA that remove dents this way. One of the automotive guru's can probably help you.

There is a process that employs a rotating shaft with flexible paddles that removes dents. I understand that hammering thins the metal, causing stretching of the metal, but this process creates friction heat which helps the dent removal process in a less deforming manner.

I wish I had a link for you, but as suggested perhaps the automotive forum would be a better source of help.

Pad the hammer, use leather or plastic, thin layer of hard rubber etc. There will be a trade off in durability of the hammer surface for the reduction in noise.

put something in between the hammer and the metal, like lead. this would reduce the power but quieten it, or a piece of wood. if you used a hard wood, it wouldnt lose too much pwer
