Injector push rods were damage cat engine #3616

12/09/2008 7:32 PM

Dear all,

Could you please help me to explain the root cause failure analysis about my injector push rod inside the cylinders unit of caterpillardiesel type 3616.

Several units of pushrod was damage with scratch indication. For your information, as you know each one unit of engine has 16 cylinders. Every one cylinder has 1 injector pushrod, 1 intake push rod and 1 exhaust pusrod. It may correct?

There are 8 engines with number of damage of cylinders variously. For example: there is one engine with 13 push rod was damage, scratch indication

I will give you some evidence for your further analysis, below:

  1. PM 2000 hrs performed by Crew under. Adjustment of valves and injectors were doing at the time. SMU reading 70504 hrs.
  2. PM 3000 hrs performed Crew. HMU reading 72109 hrs.
  3. PM 4000 hrs performed by Crew on 12 Nov 2008. HMU reading 74798 hrs. The oil and filter change interval period itself already over 1689 hrs (oil in hour is 2689 hrs, from HMU 72109 hrs to 74798 hrs). The PM has overdue since last PM 3000 hrs where the oil changed.

Evident found during PM 4000 hrs:

Based on all data which I have been sent, what is the probably cause? Wrong adjusting, viscosity oil or the other

Thanks in advance,

Kuncoro Gunawan

Apparently the sliding surfaces worked without any or without enough lubricant. Check for supply ducts if free or closed.

Dear Guru,

Thank you your prompt response

If the probably cause is without any or without enough lubricant, why the push rod was damage the injector push rods only? Because there are 3 push rods as a mentioned previously.

As we knew, caterpillar has the adjusting fuel timing injector about the contact metal between push rod and rocker arm.

It may the wrong adjusting?

Your good comments is highly appreciated

Thanks,

Kuncoro

I do not know if they have same supply duct. What I answered is what I can say about the way worn surfaces look like. The input you give is by far not sufficient to explain all details. You should investigate which ducts are clogged, explain why the filter is broken, how the oil comes to the sliding surfaces and of course the kind of dirt in the oil as dimensions and composition. Are there any other engine parts worn as well? Which one? Which kind of wear.

The figures you brought in are too small, when you bring a picture you can increase its dimensions to make it more comprehensive to the reader. It is indicated in the message that you can strech it.

To find the root cause, lets not jump to early conclusions.

To find all posible causes, have a brain storm sesion with all (local) experts. No one should be judged on a honest oppinion!

Look at the facts, rule out what can not be supported by any fact.

Then ask WHY over and over, and find the root cause.

Why are only some rods damaged. Why did you find filter material at all? Have all engines been maintained with the same (brand/badge)filters? Oil? Fuel? Are there other old filters from the same badge that can be checked? What would happen if filter parts or dirt particles enter the lubrication system and cause starvation of lubrication here and there?

More clear analysis reports before failure and after thirst signs are needed. Sorry I can't reed the reports you have included.

I should not draw any conclusion on the given facts! I can only give my personal oppinion!

I think that filters have been contaminating the lubricant. I can't tell iff the filter was faulty, damaged by the oil or ?

I hope this helps a little.

Best regards, Harmen Beskers
