Wanted: Non-Metallic Self-Lubricating Ring Gear

12/10/2008 4:58 AM

I'm looking for a self lubricating ring gear with internal teeth which has an internal diameter of 90 mm.

Does anybody have any information or materials knowledge of commercially available products of this type? [or materials to make them]

The ring gear is stationary and would have a standard gear wheel of half the above diameter inside it rotating up to 3500 rpm.

I vaguely remember seeing nonmetallic steel substitute gearwheels somewhere but can't remember where.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

For a gear transmission not only the diameter is important but also the module or the diametral pitch and this you do not give.

The feasibility depends on the torque you intend to transmit. Rpm is quite high and if the tangential load goes over a limit which depends on the material capability to diffuse generated heat the plastic tooth will melt. So giving a hint for the material to be used is with data you gave not possible. You find ( I presume you are in the UK) a lot of nylon gear suppliers via kellysearch or other engines. There are several qualities some of them with incorporated lubricants either solid (graphite...) or special greases. But in all cases the limit is the transmitted power and generated heat.

Best you use google as I did and find the supplier near to your place.

Maybe by using the term 'non-metallic' it's bit misleading.. it can be made of metal(s) or metal alloys as long as it equals or surpasses the strength and wear properties of the usual steel [with lubricant] internal gears and is self lubricating.

Seems like Delrin [DuPont] and Phenolic are the standard non-metallic materials used and they both have many variations.

I will have to get back to you with the calculations because I have a design issue to solve right now plus I'm rather busy with other things. Thx Jon

Hello J_London_UK:

Here are some nonmetallic gears. Not sure if they have the one you want, but my first choice would be the top link in Hertford UK.

The second site will make gears to order, in any material.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks! I am actually in China for now but all info helps form an overall knowledge of what does what and is available commercially and I may make the prototype in the UK or France anyway. Regards, Jon
