Robin Pat tester

12/12/2008 1:40 PM

I just managed to buy an ageing Robin manual pat tester IR80 with an analogue display. I have no instructions for it but would like to know if anybody has one and what tests it will perform. I am a bit of an analogue junky and my pass/no pass pat equipment just leaves me cold and questioning. Did it pass easily or just pass etc? The unit has an insulation test button (500V?) a double insulation test button (?) a continuity test and an earth bond test (20A?) it has one earth wander lead fixed and 110v and 240V sockets.

I am unsure as to how to use it for double insulated class 2 equipment. Any ideas?

Thanks, Richard.

Have you looked on the internet for the instruction manual?

I am unsure as to how to use it for double insulated class 2 equipment. Any ideas?

The standard appliance test for double insulated equipment is to test from the insulating case to the live parts (hence testing the insulation). This is commonly done by wrapping the double insulated product in tin foil and connecting one lead to the tin foil and the other lead to the two phase and neutral pins (linking them together). Voltage level really depends on the equipment and standard you are testing to.

There is plenty of information on the internet regarding performing these tests (including test procedures and applicable voltages). Try googling "appliance insulation resistance testing procedures".

Thanks Jack of all....

The double insulation test has a separate button which on looking inside the case is wired in parallel with the normal insulation test button ie it is the same test. It may be for a different model or have been re-wired.

Thanks for your help any way.

Richard
