Procedure to check bending of cantilever.

How can i check the benging of cantilever? Please provide me the design procedure of the same.

For checking the deflection of the cantilever for Jib Crane following methods is used:-

Tie Plumb at the end of the beam and measure the height of the plumb from the floor with a right angle or scale from the floor in unloaded condition. Load the canti lever beam with overload and measure the height of the Plumb again. The difference in the heights is the deflection of the canti lever in over loaded condition.

Hello sameer_007,

What parameter do you want to check?

When a cantilever beam is loaded more or less near the free end, of course it bends.

Maximum deflection is in the free end an equals P.L3/3EIz where, P is load applied, L is the beam length, E the material Young's modulus and Iz is the beam cross section inertia momentum.

If you want to check deflection: Just take measurement of relative height of free end to any non moving reference surface. After loading take the same measurement. Difference between that two measurements is the beam deflection.

If you want to check the beam profile. you can repeat the above procedure for as many different distances to embodiment as you want and represent it graphically.

You may do it also with an optical level and a rule.

If you want to check the stresses along the beam, you may bond strain gages in longitudinal direction at all points you want (even use those special gradient measuring gages which include 10 or more units strain gages on one unique mounting film)

Stress at any point is σx = P.X.t/2Iz where σx is the stress at point X, P and Iz as previously defined, X the distance from point of load application and the strain gage centerline, and t is the beam thickness(height).
