Manufacturing Fasteners: How to Get Moulds and Process?

10/22/2006 5:43 AM

I am interested in manufacturing nuts, washers, bolts, nails, screws, locks, levers and handles, I would like to know information about processing to form these products and how I could go about to get moulds.

Thank you in advance.

Sorry this isn't much help, but your title reminded me of a newspaper headline (probably from urban myth), about a lunatic who assaulted the workers in a laundry before fleeing:

NUT SCREWS WASHERS and BOLTS.

Cheap nuts and bolts are pressed in high speed machines. precision ones are cut on autofeed lathe type setups.

Cost of entry is high, established people have old fully paid for machines to do this. New people have very costly high speed ones for the same task. It is a low end commodity...why do it?

Didn't you ask this question a couple of days ago or is everybody trying to get into the business?

Asking a question as broad as yours is like asking how long is a piece of string. The answer is it can vary enormously depending on what they are used for. At one end of the market you have hand made items built to fine tolerances and at the other end of the market you have cheap mass produced low tolerance items.

I don't think you have a clear understanding of what goes on. Just because two bolts look alike doesn't mean they are the same. Many engineering disasters have been caused by people thinking identical looking items are interchangeable.

If you are going to go into it without understanding what the end product is used for and it requirements and just produce a product that you think is correct then you will probably end up causing another engineering disaster.

I will give you and example. During the maintenance of an aircraft a maintenance engineer found a faulty bolt that held the wind shield. To be safe he replace all the bolts with new ones that appeared to be identical. The result was that the were not identical and as the aircraft passed through about 25,000 feet they failed and the windscreen blew out taking the pilot with it. Fortunately for all on board the flight engineer managed to grab the pilots legs before he was completely sucked out the window and the co-pilot managed to land the aircraft. They came very close to him going out the window and taking the tail plane off in which case everybody on board would have been killed.

Do you get the picture now?

The high end of Screw manufacturing requires: Hot forming, cold heading, metalurgical knowledge, heat treating, surface finishing, plating, microstructure analysis and a host of other information. At the other end of the spectrum are high speed screw machines and hot headers which produce product at high rates of speed with excellent process capability. There are no molds as such for most screws, they are peoduced by other means. It seems to me that you need to do a lot more research before committing to this venture.

Good Luck

I suggest he specialize in left hand flat washers(non locking), Niches like this have fewer competitors.
