Sub station Battery Maintenance

12/16/2008 5:54 AM

what is the importance of measuring battery Impedance? how can impedance of battery give its health? or its efficiency? or battery condition?

None if your just going to take a battery and measure its impedance and try to determine its health from your reading. There are to many variables that can effect the impedance. Can give some useful information if you have something to compare it to. As a log of periodic tests on the battery. Abrupt changes in the impedance can indicate future failure.

The battery health can be approximated by measuring Battery Internal Impedence or Internal Resistance. But this would require previous records of log.

OR we can verify the manufacturers value for internal impendence and as thumb rule we follow is it should not cross 1.5 times the manufacturers value. But again this is only guestimate. Proper maintenance ( temperature, charging systems), sp. gravity for wet cells can help us in monitoring.

May I know how the term 'Impedance' is used for battery since it is a DC system and no frequency is involved.
