Re: sidecar equalean info

I specifically remember this brand of "leaning" sidecar being tested in a motorcycle magazine. It was put on a GPZ1100 for testing. The magazine was dated 1983 +/-.

The thing was fully enclosed and had one small wheel under the sidecar so the majority of the sidecars weight was on the one wheel instead of a significant portion being supported by the motorcycle. There was linkage that connected it to the bike so both bike and sidecar could still lean. I remember the magazine saying the bike now required more steering force and the combination was not able to lean as far as the bike alone due to "stops".

I had an Equalean attached to a 1977 R100S BMW. While it was an interesting unit going down the road, it had a fault. The lean limitation caused a crash, while in a tight right turn. Anything beyond a 35 degree right turn caused the bike to make contact with the front strut of the sidecar. When I needed a lean of 40 degrees, theres' nowhere to go but into the opposite lane. Thankfully that lane was clear of oncoming traffic.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone with a square four, have you looked on the net for owners clubs & forums? They are usually helpful people.

I once owned an Equalean Sidecar. They were being manufactured by Marc Jameson, Jameson fabrication in Southern California. Bought it brand new around 1985-1987. The body was damaged in an accident and I lost a few thousand $$$ when the replacement body I ordered was never shipped. From what I understand there were a number of other people who lost money as well.
