Wanted: Special Filter / Membrane

12/21/2008 6:35 PM

HI guys, Looking for a material/filter/membrane that will act as a filter allowing air to move through but not allow water (only a small amount if any) to move through. I remember reading something in a biology class years ago about some sort of filter that acted this way. Any help would be appreciated.

There are several technologies like this that I am aware of. The exact one depends on just what you want to do. However, a good starting point is to look at Zeolite polymer membranes which have application in dehumidifying air.

There is also a current scam involving purported membranes of this sort as a part of a fuel enhancement process. I trust you're not doing anything illegal such as this and I hope you're not a victim of such a swindler.

For I am nothing if not critical. - Othello

Hi - You can find such hydrophobic membranes at many places. Less expensive than Goretex are pressure compensation seals, which you can buy from Schreiner ProTech;

good luck!

Why not just water/air separator?

Find it in any serious hardware store.

I suspect the best way to separate water from air is to first define whether the water is in liquid form, gas form, or a combination. The optimum separation technique will depend on which phase the water is in. Because you have not specified the phase, you are getting various answers. If the water is in vapor form, a drying column filled with desiccant or a refrigerated dehumidifier are common techniques. If the water is in liquid droplets, a separator should do the job. I don't know of a conventional filter material that will trap water vapor and allow air to pass. Water molecules are very small.

Hi,

I am not sure this is what you are looking for. Tyvek house wrap is a membrane that can allow air and watervapor through, but will not allow water to penetrate. I believe it can still be found at hardware and building supply stores.

Cheers

Thanks guys, I dug a little deeper into what would help. It is called an exhaust mist eliminator or liquid coalescing filters. Trying to find a product, a one inch pad or less to trap the water (which is in droplet and vapor form) from passing through and just letting the air through. The water is constantly being picked from a resivoir via and sprayed into the air. I want to contain the water and allow the air to pass into the atmosphere. Any other ideas now? Make, manufacturer, material?
