WMV to DVD

12/26/2008 9:05 PM

Hello, I hope someone here will be able to help me find a way to take a WMV file on my computer and put it on a DVD that will work on my DVD player that is attached to my TV. In the interest of full disclosure I should tell you that what I REALLY want to do is to look at pictures that I have taken with my digital camera as a slide show on my TV. I have software (Picasa3) that will turn my pictures into a slide show and it outputs the WMV. But I cant seem to make a disk that my DVD player will recognize.Google shows me lots of stuff for ripping DVD's and the like but I don't think that stuff will do what I need. Oh and I would prefer a Free option if that sort of thing is available. Thanks for your time and a Happy Holiday to you all. Best Regards, John from Virginia

To do this this you will need a converter program, there are many available for free Download. Sites like Brothersoft, Cnet and others have these. To do a search for them just type in, wmv to dvd converter. and you will have a multitude of choices! Although I would highly recomend that you research these programs and chose the one you feel you would be most comfortable with. Also on doing the install of this program, I would recomend that you do a Custom Install as some of these "Free Downloads" may come with some very useless add ons such as tool bars, and other unwanted items. Hope this helps and GOOD LUCK!

Depending upon the operating system a converter may not be needed.

.wmv files run nicely in windows programs and DVD players run .wmv files.

How can you steer someone down a path without understanding their load?

Hello,

Whenever I am looking for some software to do anything, my first place to check is www.downloads.com. Seems logical, I know. Upon a quick search of "wmv to dvd", I came up with:

http://www.download.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=wmv+to+dvd&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows

Most times, the software is free but may come with restrictions on the license (i.e. 60 day trial version, etc.) The downloads always proceed quickly, and I have never had an issue with any of the software I have downloaded from this site.

As a side note, I recently upgraded my laptop and was able to fully equip my computer with all of the software I needed using this site. Freeware versions of programs like Microsoft Office (as in OpenOffice), Adobe Acrobat, Octave (freeware version of MatLab), and more are available for free download, without restriction, via this site. Happy hunting.

Also, happy holidays to all CR4 readers and contributors. Best of happiness and health this holiday season.

Hello MechMatt,

Do you know that .wmv is a file type used by windows media player? Windows media player is standard audio/video platform within the windows O/S. WM can process .wmv files directly to DVD without any auxiliary converting software required, it is an integral of the programs capabilities.

How many pictures do you have? I have found that picture CDs from photo processing companies (e.g. Kodak easyshare, pharmacies etc) play as slideshows when put into a DVD player. The DVD player would recognise that it is a picture CD and start a slideshow. Might even work if you just dump all the pics onto a CD.

A good freeware to easily produce DVD is VSO DivxToDVD

This however, cannot create DVD menus, but simply auto-start your movies as a DVD.
