Roller Chain Design

12/30/2008 7:17 AM

Which hp(total) of a roller chain is more applicable and advisable to use in designing and determining the number of strands of a roller chain? (a) a hp(total) that is much higher or greater than the design hp or (b) a hp(total) that is nearer to the value of the design hp, since hp(total) > design hp.

Ex.

design hp = 36 hp

(a) hp(total) = 28.6 hp x (1.7) factor for 2 strands

hp(total) = 48.62 hp

48.62 hp > 36 hp

(b) hp(total) = 22.65 hp x (1.7) factor for 2 strands

hp(total) = 38.51 hp

38.51 hp > 36 hp

looking for further respond...

thank.

This doesn't directly answer your question, but have you checked out "The Complete Guide to Chain" site? Section 4.1.2 describes the coefficients used in the selection of multiple strand chain.

The large chain manufacturers all have technical guidelines as to how to apply their chain including margin in different types of applications. Smooth running applications require less margin than rough running applications.

In looking at chain applications, I look at ultimate rated pull force and rated working pull force as well as other attributes.
