Georgia Finally Admits that Evolution is a Fact

05/24/2005 3:30 PM

Workers in Cobb County, GA have finally started removing the stickers on text books that read: "This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully, and critically considered."

They admitted nothing...

They made the change due to a court order.

It is scarier that it is the courts (which cannot be held accountable), rather than the elected officials, who dictate what our children learn and not the parents who elect the officials.

It is essential that the courts make this decision precisely because they are not held accountable, ie need to get elected. They are free to judge with their principles. If judges, who have worked with the law and studied the law for decades, are not qualified to make decisions regarding a state run institution, who is? The pandering politician who bases his decisions on exit polls? Is that what you would want if you were a minority? Evolution is a fact. Questioning the validity of evolution is an excercise in sophistry, not science. Parents are most certainly capable of controlling what a child learns. Options such as home schooling and private schools exist.

How are these guys not like the Taliban? I remember now... the Taliban managed to get further along in their agenda before being put out of action.

Flatlanders

Now if they will just admit the world is round. I don't go to there church to teach differential Equations, I'd appreciate them not teaching religion in my schools.
The founding fathers were smart enough to separate Church and State to avoid just such things.

yes, but they needed the court order to do this. If something that is based on fact can't seem to be proven to them, then the "theory" that the earth is round will not be proven to them either. To them you are just a silly heathen.

It was not the Founding Fathers who separated Church and State. It was the Supreme Court in 1947 (Everson v Board of Education), 1962 (Engel v. Vitale, 370 U.S. 421 ) and 1963 (Abington v. Schempp). The term "Wall of separation" is not in any founding documents, but in a letter by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptist in 1802 (see http://members.tripod.com/~candst/tnppage/baptist. htm).

the founding fathers did not make that seperation, remember ALL of our laws are based on the 10 comandments. this country was based on religious freedom.

Stalinist Genetics

Some of the recent efforts to remove mention of evolution from the schools remind me a bit of Stalinist genetics.

Like religion, politics have no place in science.
