01/03/2009 12:09 PM

I have seen an installation of surge arrester but this is installed according to the image enclosed. The arrester is switch 90 degree from the usually instalation, Do you have opinion about that?. Do you think that is posible?

Thanks

iochoa, we can't offer an opinion as you haven't included an image. Make sure the image is on your hard drive, then use the green camera image insertion tool to include it in a post.

I should not think that there would be a problem. The surge arrester works by bypassing the high voltage to ground, the position of the relief valve does not effect this it only vents excess pressure when the arc takes place .

What is the system voltage and surge arrester class? Properly graded arresters are symmetrical meaning that it doesn't make any difference which end is energized, providing the weathersheds and other features are designed and oriented for the particular mounting arrangement.

Generally, only porcelain housed station and intermediate class surge arresters are equipped with pressure relief vents in the end castings. Those vents are also arc transfer chutes to transfer internal fault current arcs externally to prevent pressure buildup and relieve internal pressure in the event of arrester failure. They are not involved in normal surge arrester operation. Surge arresters tend to fail internally as short circuits and fault or follow current arcs can build pressures that can cause violent failure of the porcelain housings.

Based on a little experience as a Journeyman Lineman it might make replacing the arrestor easier to replace with the line energized as you would be working more to the side of the conductor and vent rather than in line with it. Other than that I see no difference in where the arrestor is mounted.

Dear Ichoa,

The arrester can be installed horizontally. It doesn't affect it's operating characteristics. You can usually see this type of mounting on HV transmission lines.

I haven't seen yet horizontally installed SA's in HV substations. SA's in S/S are usually in vertical position.

It's just an issue of ease of access for maintenance purposes.
