Removing Snow and Ice from Bus Rooftops

01/07/2009 8:09 AM

It is snowing and icing. I am in transportation business and I need to come out a system to remove the snow and ice from the rooftop of bus before it departs for services. Any suggestion will be appreciated. The snow/ice removal must be quick. Imagine a system must remove snow/ice for several hundreds buses in each depot and each bus only allows several minutes to remove the snow/ice. Build a huge shed costs too much money to justify for remove the snow only less than 10 times a year.

Bus is approx 9' wide and 11' high and 40 ft long.

We use a system of 2 upright beams with a hoist suspended on the cross beam. Our trucks or trailers will move into place through a series of cones to the plow suspended from the hoist. It is held in position by two guide rails to keep it level and from swinging. The operator lowers the plow until the chain just starts to become slack. Then he raises it just a bit to keep excess weight off the roofs. The vehicle slowly moves forward until it clears the plow. Then we have a little bobcat with a bucket on the front to push the built up snow out of the way and pile it up off to the side. Works great, but you need to have a reliable person operating the plow/hoist. The plow is a V to push the snow to the sides rather than one side or the other.

By the way. The wiper on the plow is made of rigid rubber, not steel.

I concur with charsley99 Use an I-beam stand with a plow hanging down. Being Buses and roof damage would not be good. I would look at using a rubber squeegee like use in a car wash to clean off the snow with an added air blower system like use in the car wash to blow off the snow and water. Come summer add spray nozzles and wash and dry the buses on there way out

It can be all self controlled with sensor and limit switches. There are a number of sensor system available, Light bean, micro switch , pressure pads. That will turn the system on and off. The cost is how elaborate you want to get. I would think the over the top roller to start air blowers if used would work well. The amount of space you have to work with, local government and DEQ laws.

I would keep it simple. With an I-beam stanchion, rubber scrapers formed in the general shape of the bus roof. With and air blower on one or both sides to help move the snow off and leave the bus in a dryer state. Do not make the rubber to hard as it will damage the paint and cut rivets and catch on sharps. I think there wil alway be a thin layer of ice/ snow on top.

As far as the snow that has been removed you are on your own there.

Driving fast doesn't work for you? That usually takes the snow off for me.

We could be ticketed for that in our state. Safety issues.

But people still do it.

Run the bus through the bus washer? Water will melt off the snow if it is only 10 time per year.

I also like the hi-pressure, hi-velocity blower idea suggested earlier. Support an air stripper with 50-60 mph blast of air at the top of the bus and blow off the snow.
