Torque Measurement - Rapid Mixer Granulator

We have a rapid mixer granulator driven by 50 HP motor. Differanse between no load and full load varies between 2 amp. to 6 amp. based on input characteristic. We wish to standardise granulation process based on torque, change in currant is very low. Please guide me to establish reliable method to establish end point.

You may be able to use a clamp-on torque meter which uses strain gauges as the sensor, as long as the shaft is not too overdesigned to prevent damage to the shaft. Please advise: 1. Shaft Outer Diameter 2. Shaft Inner Diameter (if any) 3. Shaft Material. 4. Maximum power 5. RPM at Maximum power 6. Is the shaft clear or does it have a shroud around it? 7. Is there space available for mounting the strain gauges. One needs about 1/3 meter of clear lineal shaft space. 8. Ambient operating temperature range of the shaft. Reply to edrossiter2@aol.com

I see three solutions.

1) installing a tacho generator or a puls generator on the motor shaft. At no load the motor will turn 1500 RPM. Al full load the motor will turn 1450 RPM. The speed difference is almost linear with the motor torque. The problem now is being able to quickly measure the difference in the number of pulses.

2) instaling a frequency converter before the motor. One can buy frequency converters that give out the motor torque or the motor power as a 0 - 10 VDC signal.

3) measuring the cos fi of the motor and the input current. The combination of these signals will give you the electrical active input power of the motor. When the shaft speed remains the same, this is also a reference for the motor torque.

Combine both of these solutions to obtain speed control of motor,assuming that speed changes,has an effect on product size/quality.

Not very expensive,and new ac drives can give you good speed control

Torque Measurement - Rapid Mixer Granulator Parameter that I check :
1. RPM of the propeller blades
2. The homogenity of the granule.... take samples represent all granule and analyze the concentration
