crazy ball

01/13/2009 9:25 AM

my question is that why a crazy ball goes much higher after tapping the ground?

is it b'coz some chemical reaction takes place inside the ball everytime it hits the ground. this chemical reaction must be exothermic and hence provide the ball with an extra energy that takes it much higher every time it returns after tapping the ground?

Rheological behaviour of the stuff: the faster it is loaded the stiffer it is so that less energy is lost in internal friction.

I suspect it's simply acting on the energy you used to throw it down.

Simple experiment. Hold the ball some distance from the ground (do this on a large flat surface, like a parking lot). Release it. IIRC (and it's been 40 years) it will bounce and bounce and bounce but each bounce will be smaller than the previous one, and it will eventually stop.

Otherwise, it would bounce higher and higher each time and eventually reach escape velocity.

"SuperBalls (originally "Super Ball") is an example of a bouncy ball invented by Norman Stingley, and manufactured by Wham-O in 1965. It is an extremely elastic ball made of Zectron, which contains the synthetic rubber polymer polybutadiene, vulcanized with sulfur at a temperature of 165 °C (329 °F) and at a pressure of 80 standard atmospheres (1,200 psi).[1] The Super Ball has a very high coefficient of restitution. Dropped from shoulder level, a Super Ball will bounce nearly all the way back; thrown down, it can leap over a 9-story building."*

*from Wiki

I remember these when they first came out. Everyone had to have one. I bet they sold 10 million in the first year.

Sush a crazy question - do people think before asking ? assume that a chemical reaction taking place to release the energy - what ever minuscule- what will be left out of the ball after a few hundred bumps ? ash or carbon ?

Some times as del said I feel Fiendish

still retired none

no chemical reaction you know, as mentioned it is only physical (physical= related to physics) or elastic ,

however got to ask the guest.

I think they ar dipping like crazy (balls) at least in our part - I feel the guset should fix the crazy balls to the stocks (what ever he is holding) so that they go higher after each dip.

It may not only help him and others but may also win him this years Nobel Prize for Economics

(I think he should advise Pr Obama and put same balls on Lehmann Brs and others)

I don't think he will win the Nobel prise, no mater how hard he tries to bounces the ball. Obama has a hard job ahead of him. India has done well over the years, There may be a lesson there to learn, but when you try to bounce to many balls, your timing will not be as it should be. All the best to you and your family.

There was a beautiful article (totally off topic) but it spells out the reason why India has done/ doing well in this global crisis (and the lessons - and it is not because of us - the so called elites, but from the middle and lower income groups)

And this is since they didn't listen to the economists (including nobel laureautes) and the politicians
