Looking for Very Small 3V LEDs

01/14/2009 12:24 AM

Where can I find the smallest switches, eg. the thickness of the current Key pads. I need to experiment switching 3V LED lights on a dog collar. I want to make as sleek as possible. Can you help me experiment with what is readily in the market?

Re: LED light switch with a few millimeter displacement for a dog collar

Go to any component manufacturer such a www.DigiKey.com or www.Newark.com or www.alliedelec.com and use the search box. Type in "surface mount switches" for a wide selection of the smallest switches available to the average person. You can probably ask for a sample and get it for free.

Thank you for your leads. I want to manufacture a dog collar that has some RGB LED lights on it. I was not successful finding a good source for a sleek switch, but you and BabyBear helped me with that.

Best to you both, Sean

Hello Sean_rashti:

Can you give a few more details? What is the size you want. l x w x thickness? And do you know what kind of switch you want. I was looking on Digikey.com a few weeks ago and they can supply all you want. The one I was looking at was as thick as paper and about the same size as a thumbnail, with two little tabs to solder a switch or circuit to. It was a touch sensor actually. Can you give any more details of what exactly you want to make and how it will be used? Do you have in mind lighted dog collars so they can be seen in the dark?

What country are you in because I can find stuff near where you live, or try?

I would take a visit to Digikey as they has a chat facility on the site where you can tell them what you want to do and they will suggest a switch to suit.

Take care..................

Re: Looking for Very Small 3V LEDs

Thank you Babybear. I have a design for a dog collar with 3 LED lights connected to a coin battery. My dilemma was a sleek switch that would stick on the vinyl fabric, in addition I had difficulty finding a battery holder that could withstand weather, water and rain. I found my vinyl fabric, soldered the LED lights to two copper strips. These copper stips would run inside the collar, while the LEDs peak out of these small holes through the vinyl collar.

The switch would be stuck on the vinyl surface, while connection would dive 1mm into the fabric to meet their destined wires. Next I ran into another problem. I realized that the electrical guts, the LEDs on the strips, must be water proofed too. Now add a waterproof switch.

On the battery front, I changed my approach by going with a cylindrical battery, and hoped to find a water proof battery holder. I coudn't find one, so I designed my own, and I would have to manufacture it myself. I may have to find ways to waterproof the switch too. So you see, I have more problems ...

So you want to help me...I am honored. Here is a tidbit about your humble servant: I went med-school and developed no electrical talent.

I do appreciate your offer to help.

Great Regards, Sean
