SMART : Self Monitering ,Analysis and Retorting Technology.

HART: Highway Adressable Remote Transducer. This is a bi directinal communication protocol which provides data access b/w SMART field instruments and the host system.

They are communicating in normal 4-20 MA and digital signal also. The process variable is communicated in 4-20 ma and they are superimposed by a digital signal using FSK .So the digital signal carries the additional information like the status of the devise, diagnostic ,measured and calculated data etc.As the digital signal is using 1200 bps they will notinterept the process variable.

it can be used for point to point as well as multi drop communication. This is a master slave configuration.

Dear Friend,

You don't have SMART protocol.

You have something called as HART protocol, it is a form of digital communication that a SMART transmitter can posses.

Note: When you say a "SMART" transmitter, it is an intelligent transmitter that has

analog output but that also permits simultaneous digital communication

HART-Highway addressible Remote Transducer-

It is an open protocol and on a single transmission line, 15 transmitters can be connected. Every transmitter is given a number(identity)Digital signal is super imposed on analog signal and speed of communication is very fast.

SMART-Signal Modulation and Re-ranging Transducer- is a Honeywell proprietory protocal used by Honeywell Transmitters.

What Honeywell line used SMART (Signal Modulation and Re-ranging Transducer) as a protocol?

I'm familiar with several ASCII protocols Honeywell has used over the years, DE (Digital Enhanced) used on ST-30000 field transmitters (a modulated 4-20 signal in binary format), but not SMART. But then again, Honeywell is a large company with many divisions.

There's a list of hundreds of protocols at this site:
http://www.enodenetworks.com/Links.htm
with smart as part of their name, but not matching exactly. There's several protocols I know of that aren't listed, so the list is not comprehensive)

Yokogawa used the "Brain" protocol for a number of years and might still be.
