In most cases, a typical unspliced joint is for example, if you needed to connect two sections of H beam and both pieces were "butted up" to each other and then welding at the contact points to form one continuous beam. Let's say you needed a beam that was 12' in length and you had two sections, one 9' and the other 3', then this is how you could accomplish it. Please take note though that a connection like this is limited somewhat in it's strength and load bearing capabilities.

A spliced joint would be similar with the exception that smaller square plates of a designated thickness would be "scab welded" on both sides of the H beam in order to facilitate a much stronger and higher rated load bearing unit.

Please understand that these are normal applications that are performed everyday, but they must be according to established standards and procedures for them to be acceptable and safe. Safety being the main priority.

Pushap,

For more details, I think you should refer to 1) AWS D1.1 Steel Structures; 2) AWS D1.2 Aluminium Structures.

Best Book for weld design that I've found:

"Design of Welded Structures" by Omar Blodgett (I may not be exactly right)

"Design of Weldments" by Omar Blodgett

These seem to be widely used and accepted as industry standards design references.
